I think one of the most confusing things about being a woman is just understanding ourselves. I mean for myself I am more likely to follow my emotions than logic. I can be extremely happy one moment and then sad the next. To be emotionally led seems to be the norm in this day and age, to just do whatever feels right and not think about the consequences.
Thankfully, this is not how we have to live our lives! God promises in His Word that if we commit our ways to Him, He (meaning God, the Holy Spirit) will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:6). I am so thankful time-and-time again that God directs my life even when I don’t know where to turn. Even when I’m an emotional mess I know that God always knows which way to go, and when I choose to follow Him I will not get off course.
If we would learn to rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us, we would avoid so many unnecessary bad mistakes and heartache. While our emotions can let us down and lead us to who-knows-where, there is something a little more stable we can rely on, something that will never lead us astray. That something is called the peace of God.
Philippians 4:6-7 says: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” WOW! Think about that! The peace of God is so strong it literally guards our hearts and minds!
Have you ever been in a situation where you had peace even though everything around you seemed to be falling apart. But you knew-that-you-knew everything was going to be okay? That knowing is the peace of God! If we would learn to stay in that peace and follow it we would never get off course. You cannot get lost following the peace of God! As a born again child of God we should make it a habit to have that peace in every area of our life, relationships included.
While its easy to be emotionally led that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the only way to be led. When feeling overwhelmed instead of letting your emotions take control, take a step back and spend a few minutes alone with God. Take a deep breath, put your emotions on hold, and ask the Holy Spirit to be your guide. He promises to do just that!
