On one of the most pathetic days of my life…and believe me, I’ve had many days of self-pity to choose from, I texted my best friend, and simply said, “I’m so pathetic.” However, not even four hours had passed from when I texted her again, this time around saying…
“Oh my gosh, I’m so happy!!!”
I remember laughing hysterically at myself after sending that last message, realizing that in just a few hours I did a complete 180. What enabled me to go from zero to 60 was that smack dab in the middle of my pity party? The thought crossed my mind, “What if I just made the decision that I am going to learn to be happy right now?”
To just be happy right now. Before anything changes. With everything staying exactly the way it is – while I am single, feeling alone at times, before all my dreams have come to pass.
In Philippians 4, Paul said that he discovered “the secret of facing every situation” by learning to be content. I know that in my own life, I have often found myself in the trap of either looking off into the future and putting so much emphasis on how great “one day” will look like or looking back and reminiscing about how special “back then” was.
To be honest, this is still something that I can struggle with at times. Yet, I am done with the constant ping-pong game, being bounced around from place to place, event to event, looking to those things to give a sense of satisfaction, when their resulting fulfillment is only temporary.
Before we are living out all of our dreams, before we are in a relationship, before we reach our desired body shape, or before anything else, we can just be happy NOW by giving God thanks right now!
Like Paul, we can learn to be content no matter what season of life we find ourselves in because our happiness and our fulfillment is not somewhere off in the future and it’s not behind us. No event, relationship, or accomplishment has the power to sustain and permanently fulfill us.
2 Corinthians 2:14 says, “Now thanks be unto God who always causes us to triumph!” From personal experience, I know that focusing on everything that is wrong and that hasn’t happened yet takes us on a dark, downward spiral of despair.
Self-pity keeps us stuck in the pit.
However, giving God thanks for what He has done and for what He is about to do is the sure way to come up and to come out! When we turn around what we’ve been saying, we can watch God turn things around in our lives!
So let’s quit waiting for the “next thing” and no longer live in the trap of always thinking that “the grass is greener on the other side.” Jesus has made us complete and it’s our choice to rejoice.
Today is a great day to choose to be thankful and to choose to be happy!
