Last week we talked about stepping out on what God told us to do, but have you ever wondered if what you were to do was from God?
My God Told Me So
Many times all we need to accomplish the next step is the assurance that it is from God. You can never do a good job if you are always questioning if you should do it or not. For example, as a child if my mother gave me an important task to do and while I was accomplishing it one of my siblings came up to me and said, “What are you doing, Paige? You’re not supposed to be doing that!” All I would have to say is, “Yes, I am! My Mom told me so!”
In the same way when God tells us to take a step, we have to know without a doubt that this is from Him. Because there will be doubts and people that tell us the same thing, “What in the world are you doing, girl? You’re not supposed to be doing that!” That is when we firmly plant our feet on the ground and say, “Yes, I am. My God told me so!”
When we are fully persuaded that our next step was given to us directly from God – nothing can stop us!
How did I know my mother told me so? Because I listened to her…
Pay attention, come close now, listen carefully to my life-giving, life-nourishing words. Isaiah 55:3 MSG
Some of us already know what is the next step we should take, if you aren’t sure, it is time to get quiet with God and simply listen.
I challenge you to grab your Bible, notepad & pen and set aside time to hear from the Lord this week. Turn off all distractions. That may mean your phone, TV, social media or whatever fights for your attention. Give Him your full attention – He is speaking, we need to be listening.
Ask Him to show you what you need to be doing. As He lays what you should be doing on your heart, write it down!
At first you might think what comes to you is silly and unrelated to what you were asking Him, but it might just be the missing link. What He usually shows me to do hardly ever seems connected to what I was asking Him, However there are a couple of things that they almost always have in common.
Here’s a Clue
Here are a couple of clues that what you have on your heart is from your Father:
- It just won’t go away.
Here is one very likely reason it is from Him – It just won’t go away. What God places inside of you keeps growing. Yes, you can choose to ignore it, but you will have to go to some effort in order to shut it down.
Joseph in the Bible was given a dream, and it never went away. I believe knowing God gave it to him was what kept him going through all the trials that he faced. Being sold into slavery didn’t kill it, being falsely accused didn’t kill it & being forgotten in prison to rot didn’t kill it. Joseph did not let go of what God had shown him He would do (Genesis 37).
Just like Joseph we need to accept what God is telling us and determine that nothing will shake us.
- It usually involves stepping outside of your comfort zone.

What He is telling you to do could be as simple as: Keeping your word when you say you’re going to do something, smiling at that person who makes your stomach churn every time you see them, visiting that certain someone who’s company you do not enjoy, etc. Whatever it may be, it usually involves you stepping out of your comfort zone. (Ouch!)
It’s funny, but I have come to realize while we think we are given the next step to help God, it is actually Him helping us. All He is trying to do is build our character. If we want to be used in big ways to help God, we have some growing to do. So be willing to leave your comfort zone for bigger and better things. He will only work in you if you are willing.
So, once you know that what you have in your heart is from your Father, where do you go from here? Well, that’s what we will be discussing next week!
