Recently, I had a conversation with God about the plan for my life. I was seeking guidance in some areas of my life, looking for a plan. The conversation went something like this…
Me: “Father, I am ready for you to show me the plan for my life! Whatever it may be, I am ready. I just feel stuck in a few areas of my life right now, so I need you to tell me what to do in order to see some action in these areas.”
God: “Paige, I already told you what to do.”
Me: “You did? Because I don’t remember any big things you told me to do…”
God: “What about the small things I have told you to do?”
Me: “Oooooh, you mean those tiny little things. Honestly, I just don’t see what that has to do with the BIG picture. In fact, they aren’t even related to what I am asking you about right now.”
God: “They are very much related. Just because you cannot see how they are connected, doesn’t mean they aren’t.”
Paige: “But if you would just give me a plan, I will go from there.”
God: “Paige, I won’t ever show you the whole plan at once, and that is wisdom because if you were to see more than one step at a time you would get overwhelmed.”
“I’m looking at the big picture. You need to focus on taking one step at a time.”
Needless to say, this has conversation stuck with me and this phrase hasn’t left me since, “One step at a time.”
One Step at a Time
You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Have you ever asked God to show you the plan for your life? If you were like me, you were probably hoping for Him to show you the BIG picture.
I am a planner. I want a step one, step two, step three, etc. When I only see one step at a time – I get nervous because it is out of my control (like I ever had control in the first place). But this is where I am learning to trust Him. If I am fully persuaded that He loves me and has a good future planned for me (Jeremiah 29:11), why should I ever fear the next step?
After that conversation with Him, I determined to accomplish those ‘small’ things as quickly as I possibly could. Guess what? Within hours of accomplishing one of those ‘small’ steps, I saw the next step.
Here I had been wanting God to show me the whole staircase for my life, when in all reality He only needed to show me one thing – the next step.
Are You Ready?
Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with a lot.
Luke 16:10 GW
Many times we think we are ready for the big picture or the next big step, when we haven’t even taken the last step we were told to take.
When my oldest daughter began to walk, she loved to climb stairs. When she started to venture up the stairs, she knew to only take one step at a time. But the more confidant she became, the more daring she became. That’s when you have to remind your toddler, “Only one step at a time!”. Why? Because you are more likely to get hurt when you start skipping steps.
I have come to realize that this is not about God being hard to please. This is simply His mercy, because He doesn’t want to see us fail in a big way – just like the little toddler on the stairs. He wants to hold our hand and take one step at a time, together.
He wants to know that we will listen to Him in the small. Because If we won’t listen to Him in the small, what’s going to happen when we get to the big?
“Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on.” Luke 6:46-47 MSG
His words are life and they are life-changing. How I handle what He is telling me to do right now, is how I will handle what He tells me to do later.
Do you think God is speaking to you about taking a step in your life, but you aren’t sure if it is from Him. Well, that is what we are going to discuss in the next post.
