Is it me, or does it seem like we are surrounded by so many amazingly talented people today?
You cannot turn on Facebook, Youtube or TV without coming face-to-face with a plethora of gifted individuals. It’s truly amazing. It also seems that most of these gifted people knew exactly what they were supposed to be doing in life from the day they started breathing.
I was watching a well-known worship leader give an interview yesterday. She was presented with the question, “When did you know what you were supposed to be doing in life?”
“Since the beginning. It’s all I ever knew.”
I know that many people would react to that answer with a “Wow! That would be nice!”
For those who don’t think they have a gift, statements like this can be overwhelming. For every unique talent we see, we add another thing to our cannot-do list. We start to wonder if we even have a gift…
Could I have a raise of hands if you have ever been caught thinking or saying something similar to the statements below? (Come on now, be honest!)
“I don’t have any special talents.”
“There really isn’t anything that I can do that someone else cannot do.”
“I’m not really good at anything.”
“I’m just average at everything.”
“Why didn’t God create me with a special gift?”
“I wish I had so-and-so’s talent.”
I see all the hands going up now.
This post is for you. The seemingly untalented & ungifted.
Please take notice of the word “seemingly”, I used that on purpose. Because regardless of what you think or what you see – you have a gift. Yes, there is something inside of you that no one else has been given! There is something that you were specifically created for, something that no one else can quite do like you can.
I will go even further. Did you know that there is no one in this world that could do a better job at being you? How do I know that? Because He picked you for the job. If someone else would have better fitted the bill, God would have picked them, but He didn’t.
You were the most qualified person for the job of being you.
I believe that I’m speaking to someone right now. You believe that you have nothing special to serve God with. You have no special talent. No big testimony. I believe He told me to tell you that you are wrong – God has a specific plan for your life.
I was reading a biography of Mother Teresa a few months ago, and there was something that caught my attention. When this certain writer went back to interview people that had served with Mother Teresa over the years, nobody really noticed anything special about her. They said she was diligent and caring, but nothing really stood out to them. Wow. Look what this woman went on to do with ‘nothing special’.
That simply goes to prove that our gifts won’t always be noticeable from day one – sometimes gifts just take time to develop. There is nothing wrong with you if you haven’t truly discover your calling yet.
Just like Mother Teresa and every other creature that He formed – you have a gift and a purpose.
Treasure your gift.
There are times we are so focused on someone else’s gift that we cannot see the gift we have been given.
I remember being a child on Christmas Day, ripping into that one brightly wrapped box that I had waited so long for. Yes! I had waited months for this gift! But then it would happen, I would stop giving this new gift my full attention. I would start looking around at the gifts that others had received. I would start to lose interest in mine, and secretly desire what they had been given. My once precious gift would end up almost forgotten in the mounds of wrapping paper.
Maybe you have been looking and desiring other people’s gifts and talents for so long, that you don’t even remember what your gift looks like. But just because you cannot see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. You cannot see your heart either, but you know it’s there.
Many times we overlook our gifts because we would like to do what someone else is doing. But this world doesn’t need any more copies. The world needs an original you. Treasure your gift. Invest time into it. Thank God for giving it to you!
Know the why.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10
I believe I can sum up the reason for our gifts with one word: Others. When we fully realize that the treasure on the inside of us was put there for the benefit of others – nothing will be able to stop us from fulfilling our destiny!
Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. – Theodore Roosevelt
Another thing I noticed about Mother Teresa’s life is that she never let the lack of a ‘special’ gift stop her. She simply kept doing what ever she could do to with what she had. We cannot complain about a lack of ability, time or resources. We just need to get out there and do it. Not for us, but for others.
Know your gift.
I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things. – Mother Teresa
Some of you reading this post may already know what God has called you to do. That is awesome! Now it’s time to go out and start blessing others!
For those of you who have no clue, don’t worry, God will show you. He is not hiding it from you, He wants you to know. Ask Him to show you what your gift is and what you can do to further develop it.
I want to encourage you to take time looking for your gift. Look for the things that you do well. I don’t care if they are as simple as washing dishes or encouraging someone. If it comes easy to you, write it down, and keep it in front of you.
Many of us have taken for granted the things that come easily to us, we assume that everyone else can do it as easily as us, this is not usually the case. You might be surprised, your gift might have been in front of you this whole time just waiting to be opened!
So, please never again say, ” I don’t have a gift.” or ” I’m not talented.” Because we both know you have been given something very special.
You are talented and you are gifted!
